The World Came to Pioneer Square — Inside the Hat Bar Experience at Seattle's Grand Central Building

The World Came to Pioneer Square Today. We Were Ready.

June 8, 2025 | Pioneer Square, Seattle

Some days in the shop feel ordinary. Hats get blocked, brims get set, customers come and go. And then there are days like today — days that remind you exactly why you opened a hat shop inside one of the oldest buildings in Seattle.

This afternoon, Hoyle Hat welcomed a delegation of international press to the Grand Central Building. Journalists from National Geographic, El Mundo, El Español, and Fuera de Serie — four of Spain's most respected publications — stepped through our doors as part of a curated media tour of Pioneer Square, organized by the Port of Seattle, Visit Seattle, and the Pioneer Square Alliance.

They travel the world for a living. Today, they came here.

Why Pioneer Square. Why Now.

This neighborhood doesn't need us to tell its story,  it tells its own. Pioneer Square is Seattle's oldest neighborhood, rebuilt from the ashes of the Great Fire of 1889 into one of the nation's finest collections of Romanesque Revival architecture. Cobblestones. Exposed brick. A hundred years of ambition pressed into every wall. Seattle.gov

And at the center of it all stands the Grand Central Building — a trio of century-old brick buildings spanning more than 140,000 square feet, sitting empty and dark for more than six years before Urban Visions stepped in and called it what it is: the heart and soul of Pioneer Square. king5.com

That's where we live. That's where we work. That's where we made hats today for people who flew in from across the Atlantic.

What Happened Inside the Hat Bar.

If you've never experienced the Hat Bar, here's the closest we can get to describing it:

Steam rises from the kettle. A block comes down. Felt, real fur felt, the kind that lasts a lifetime — starts to give way under heat and pressure and intention. A crown takes shape. A brim gets set. Ribbon gets stitched. And somewhere in that process, the person sitting across from us stops being a visitor and starts being a collaborator.

That's what happened today. Our guests didn't watch a demonstration. They made decisions. Crown height. Brim width. Trim. Finish. They asked questions. They leaned in. And they left wearing something that didn't exist when they walked through the door.

For journalists who spend their careers covering the world's most spectacular destinations — ancient cities, remote coastlines, culinary capitals — the Hat Bar was the moment that slowed them down.

That's everything to us.

Gratitude for the People Who Made This Possible.

Days like today don't happen by accident. They happen because organizations like the Port of Seattle, Visit Seattle, and the Pioneer Square Alliance believe this neighborhood deserves to be seen by the world — and do the work to make that happen.

They brought these storytellers here. They trusted us to show them something real. We hope we delivered.

And to Urban Visions — thank you for believing in this building, in this block, and in the vision of what Pioneer Square can be again. We are proud to be here as that vision becomes real.

Come See Us.

The Grand Central Building is open. The Hat Bar is ready. Whether you're a Seattle local who hasn't made it to Pioneer Square in years, or a visitor seeing the city for the first time — come in. Let us make you something.

Every hat we make is a small act of belief that the things made slowly, made by hand, made with care, are the things worth keeping.

That's what this building stands for. That's what this neighborhood stands for.

That's what we're here for.
